Mabel Sunga Acosta Campus Journalist of the Year

Talomo students top search for campus writers

TWO students from Talomo National High School bagged the top two places in the Search for Campus Journalists of the Year at the City Council session hall Friday.

Jeffrey Christian Josol grabbed the grand prize while Lorenz Jim Taroja placed second.

Taking the third spot is Honey Joyce Toralba of Sta. Ana National High School. Karen Jane Acasaran of the Sped Bagkal placed fourth.

Josol and the three runners-up will receive a medallion of excellence and cash prizes during their respective graduation/recognition day.

The schools represented by the winners and their school paper advisers will likewise receive a Certificate of Recognition.

The annual competition, which is now on its 8th year, is sponsored by Councilor Ma. Belen Sunga-Acosta, chair of the committee on education.

The contest is aimed at discovering young talents in the field of campus journalism and encouraging young writers to become frontrunners and catalysts of social change through responsible campus journalism.

The search was open to third and fourth year students enrolled in any public secondary school in Davao City, which has a school publication.

The competition was divided into two parts: the on-the-spot editorial writing and panel interview.

This year's panel of judges was composed of Antonio M. Ajero, editor in chief of Edge Davao; Ethel Cantor-Constantino, NBN Mindanao reporter; and Bernard Julian A. Patino, instructor at the University of the Philippines in Mindanao and also a freelance photojournalist of Mindanews.

The winners will also be featured at Mabel At Your Service radio program of Councilor Acosta over dxAB, ABS-CBN Davao on March 22, 2009. (GLP)
